This was built by a Buddhist monk, Ennin in 9th centuries.

The name, Nison-in is derived from the two Buddhist statues; Shaka Nyorai and Amida Nyorai .

It is renowned for its picturesque autumn colors and the beautiful landscape surroundings for over 1200 years.

Nison-in Temple is located at the foot of Mt.Ogura like Jojakko-ji Temple and a temple of the Tendai sect. Please look at the gate. That is called Somon or the main gate. It was relocated from Fushimi Castle by a wealthy merchant, Suminokura Ryoi in 1613. The atmosphere on the temple grounds is magnificent due to the overhanging trees along the approach. You can get views over the city from the upper grounds.
