The Rakushisha was the retirement house of Mukai Kyorai, a disciple of Matsuo Basho who was a great haikumaster in the Edo priod.

“Haiku” is a poem composed of 17 syllables. Matsuo Basho visited here in 1691 and wrote his famous diary “Saga Nikki” during his stay.

Gazing upon this idyllic landscape and a thatch-roofed house, you may start feeling like a Haiku poet yourself. By the way, at that time there were about 40 persimmon trees around Rakushisha, but all the fruits had fallen in a storm overnight after the owner agreed to sell the fruits and he could not do that anymore.

The hut was named after this incident.
