Kiyomizu-dera Temple

Kyoto’s Kiyomizu-dera Temple is one of the most celebrated among Japan’s numerous temples and shrines. The name of the temple literally means “Pure Water Temple”. It is derived from the pristine waters of the Otowa Waterfall, on which site the temple was built. It is also famous for its large wooden terrace.

Kiyomizu-dera Temple was established by the monk Enchin Shonin in 778. Its present buildings were constructed in 1633, on orders of build by the 3rd Tokugawa shogun, Iemitsu. There is not a single nail used in the entire structure.
Originally, it belonged to one of the oldest schools of Japanese Buddhism, the Hosso sect dating from the Nara period. However, since 1965, it has created its own Kita Hosso sect.

Since 1994, Kiyomizu-dera Temple has been included on the list of the UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
